In this decade, the depression begins. Only a world war would make a dent in the depth of depression. Many society programs were also introduced in this period. At this time, woman started to be involved with the government. As of 1948, woman could even join the military.
Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Ohio. Their goal was to help people get and stay sober. The Tradition was that all members and groups remain anonymous in public media, to avoid conflict with other organizations. Alcoholics Anonymous is still used today by many. The neutrality acts were laws passed in 1935, 1936, 1937, and 1939 to limit America involvement in future wars. The congress made these laws in response to the growth of isolationism and non interventionism in America. The act was not so helpful, they made no distinction between aggressor and victim. They limited the US government's ability to aid Britain and France against Germany. The acts were repealed in 1941.
The selective service act of 1940, was the first peace conscription ever in the united states. It required men aged 21 through 36 to register in local draft boards. Later when the United States entered WW2, all men aged 18 to 45 were made subject to military service, and all men aged 18 to 65 were required to register. The government selected men through a lottery system, so if drafted, a man served for twelve months.
